In the Beginning
In 1781 GEN George Washington wrote to Sarah Bache, “Amidst the distress and sufferings of the Army, whatever sources they have arisen, it must be a consolation to our Virtuous Country Women that they have never been accused of withholding their most zealous efforts to support the cause we are engaged in.” Women, eager to contribute to America’s frequent causes, have been regular fixtures on the fringes of war for centuries. And while their participation has not always been equal to their male counterparts’, (if it be gauged through combat action seen or ammunition dispensed), it is impossible to ignore the significant and important roles their efforts have played during each conflict from the American Revolution to present.
